The Thong Song

I thought it was supposed to be Spring here!

This morning I was cold running my five miler.  Since turning the ripe old age of 25, it seems like everything in my body starts to ache if the Mercury drops below 40 degrees.  Seriously, all of those old injuries and nagging pains seem to be exacerbated by the cold weather.  It takes me a good 3/4 of a mile to warm up and hit my stride.  I'd give anything to have the flexibility and range of motion I had at 20!

Props to everyone running the National Marathon/Half Marathon today...I don't think I'd want to run 26.2 in this weather.  If I have to wear gloves running, I'm not a happy camper.  Yes, that makes me a wimp, but I can't say I saw many other people running down Washington Boulevard/through Clarendon today.

Since I am not running with headphones in Missoula, I abide by the rule of no iPod for my runs outside.  If I am running on the treadmill, then I absolutely can't run without music - I would get way too bored, but instead of trying to wean myself off headphones come race day, it's just easier to train without music.  Plus, I can actually hear my own thoughts instead of those of Britney Spears or Cee Lo Green (listening to Britney's thoughts would get me into trouble)!  For about the first mile or so, I think about normal things, sort through work issues, my personal life, etc., but usually after that, my mind wanders.

Today, I was thinking about one hit wonders.  You know, songs that were insanely popular at the time, but the artist/group could never follow up with a hit of the same caliber.  The first song to pop into my head was "The Thong Song" made popular by everyone's favorite platinum coiffed artist, Sisqo.  Granted, the lyrics were neither deep nor inspirational, but man, that song had a catchy hook and a playability (yes, I made that word up) that was unrivaled at the time.  The last song I could remember from Sisqo was "Unleash the Dragon," and though, that tune was equally thought-provoking, it didn't have the same radio success at Sisqo's breakout single.  Where was Sisqo now?  What happened to the artist with the silver mane?

Of course, this prompted a Google search when I got home.

For those of you who are infinitely curious, after an attempted reunion with his band Dru Hill failed in 2008, Sisqo appeared on the UK version of Celebrity Big Brother in January 2010.  He was eliminated in the 5th round of competition (thank you, Wikipedia).  What a waste of talent!

Oh well...tomorrow is a slow six miles, so I'm sure there will be many more fun thoughts after pounding the pavement to Rosslyn and back.

Happy running!
