Opening Day

Yes, it's here...Opening Day.

I think Joltin' Joe DiMaggio said it best:  "You always get a special kick on Opening Day, no matter how many you go through. You look forward to it like a birthday party when you're a kid. You think something wonderful is going to happen."

I've been waiting for this day since early November when the World Series ended (why they still call it the October Series, I have no clue).  All through the winter, I have watched the news for blockbuster trades, prayed for rejuvenated arms and scouted shiny, new gamers coming up through the farm systems.  I've read everything I could find on pre-season predictions and closely followed the spring training games to see who is destined to have a break-out year.  I'm an addict, it's official.

And no, my spirits aren't dampened by the gray mist hanging over Washington or the temperature in the low 40s.  It took some serious willpower not to play "hooky" today and catch the Nationals' season opener - if the Phillies were in town, I'd be pulling on my Jimmy Rollins jersey and red Chuck Taylors right now.  Btw, the Phillies don't play until tomorrow ( Phillies vs. Astros).

I'm planning on running inside this evening, not because of the weather, but so I can watch the games while I run on the treadmill.  I could run for days if watching a good game.  Everyone else in the gym better be up for some baseball because I'm commandeering the t.v. as soon as I get home.

Weather-permitting, this weekend I will be sitting somewhere out in left-field above the visitors' bullpen as the Nats take on the Atlanta Braves.  I'll be the one sitting there with a cold beer, hot dog and the biggest smile in the ball park spread across my face.  Mmmm...I can almost smell the fresh cut grass.

Happy running!
